Monthly Update December 2024

Welcome to our school monthly update for December 2024. Our school offers lessons for elementary school-aged children and above. We also provide daily conversation and business English classes for adults. Customized and short-term lessons are also available. We have helped improve English skills for children moving abroad and students who are studying for entrance exams or English proficiency exams such as the Eiken, TOEFL, DuoLingo, and IELTS tests. Our classes are held at our school location in Yoga Setagaya, Tokyo. Online lessons via Zoom are also available.

Lessons for Children

This month, students were excited as Christmas and the New Year approached. During classes, we progressed through textbooks and phonics practice. Students completed Unit 7 of the Let’s Go Level 3 series in our Wednesday lessons. Level 3 of the series contains a lot of junior high school-level grammar practice, and though the students struggled, by month-end, they could master and use the new grammar rules well.

An elementary school student based in the United States, whom we have taught in our Yoga classroom, is returning to Japan in January. As a sixth-grade student, she wants to attend a private junior high school starting in April 2025. As most students typically spend six months or more in preparation for entering junior high school, we have been intensely focused on working with her via Zoom lessons, practicing school interview questions and essay writing, and also introducing the MobyMax English curriculum platform.

Additionally, we continue to teach a high school graduate who is studying for the Duolingo English Test and wants to study at a U.S. college. We have provided him with reading comprehension material and access to the online English tool MobyMax. At month-end, we were encouraged by his latest test results, which were 5 points better than his original score.

Another recent Zoom student is a Japanese elementary student living in Vietnam. We are working with this student for the Eiken Pre-1 test, helping him with reading comprehension and his writing skills.

For our junior high school students, we began focusing on Eiken Pre-2 and Eiken 2 test reviews. These students wanted to take the Eiken test early in 2025, so we focused on listening, writing, and reading comprehension.

Lessons for Adults

The number of adult students has increased, and as we offer onsite and online lessons, we are able to work with students who cannot attend our class.

Currently, we are teaching several retired adults who enjoy improving their daily conversation skills. In addition, we continue teaching an adult in Paris who is improving her English (and French skills) while her husband studies at HEC Paris Business School.

Summary

Our enrollment is ongoing, and we welcome new students throughout the year. We do our best to assign students to the appropriate class.

Unlike a typical English conversation school, our school does not focus on an “English is fun” approach to learning. We help students reach their goals, including entrance to an international school, a high score on an English test, or a job change. We want to see students use English in their lives.

Our goal is to develop global citizens, students who are interested in the world around them and who can express themselves. We have been teaching English for over ten years and have many happy students; quite a few have studied with us for several years. However, not all students fit our approach.
